Gauge A Toy Poodle'S Temperament

If you don't properly gauge a toy poodle's temperament, you might end up with a dog that doesn't fit well with your family. Whether you are getting a puppy or introducing an older dog to your family, it is important to think about his temperament and evaluate it successfully so that you know the dog will fit into your life in the right way.

Instructions

Puppies

1. Turn the puppy on his back and hold him in your arms. If he relaxes and allows you to pet his tummy, you have your first sign of a good temperament.

2. Watch the poodle with other puppies. If she plays with her tail in the air, she is likely to have a good temperament.

3. Feed him food and treats. See if you can take the food away from him. If he growls at you while you do this, he is not going to be as easy-going as you might wish.

4. See if she will kiss your face. If she does, this is an indicator of a sweet demeanor.

5. Have your children hold the toy poodle puppy. If he is relaxed and calm with them, he will have a good temperament with them as well.

Older Dogs

6. Feed an older dog, then take the food away from her. If she does not growl at you, return the food and praise her. This is an indication of good temperament.

7. Watch as the toy poodle explores her new home. If he is calm and quiet, he will be that way as a matter of course. If he is loud and yappy, this is probably an indicator of the way he'll behave when he is older.

8. Have the toy poodle play with your children. Watch how she interacts with them. If she is growling at them or is not wagging her tail, you will have problems with her later.
