Located just southwest of Macon, the small town of Fort Valley, Georgia has an estimated population of 8,300, according to the town website. Fort Valley State University
Founded as a land-grant college in 1895, this school of 3,500 rests on over 1,300 acres of land. Besides an extensive agriculture program, it offers over 50 bachelor's degree programs, including education, business, communications, biology and political science. Master's degrees are also offered in animal science and biotechnology, and additional master's programs in education, counseling and environmental health are available at the extension campus in nearby Warner Robins.

Middle Georgia Technical College
Located a few miles east of Fort Valley in Warner Robins, this career-oriented school offers two-year associates degrees, one-year diplomas and one-semester certificates in a variety of studies. These include accounting, paralegal studies, aerospace, cosmetology, early childhood education and more. Classes are also held at extended off-campus sites, including Fort Valley.

Located about a half hour north in Macon, this school enrolls about 6,600 students and offers bachelor's degrees in more than 30 majors, plus associate's degree and certificate programs in various career fields.
