A homeless shelter volunteer coordinator is in charge of managing a group of unpaid workers at a facility that takes in impoverished people looking for a place to stay. The coordinator's responsibilities and schedules vary, depending on the location of the shelter and the number of volunteers.

Responsibilities

A homeless shelter volunteer coordinator is responsible for interviewing, training, and maintaining volunteers, as well as coordinating their schedules and other management duties. This includes developing training materials and arranging for orientation and training events.

Qualifications

An individual must have supervisory experience with volunteers to be qualified for this position. Experience in teaching, problem-solving and motivation of volunteers is also required.

Salary range

Salary for volunteer coordinators can range from $22,000 per year with less than one year of experience up to $48,000 per year with more than 20 years of experience.

Work Schedule

Homeless shelters operate at all times of day, and volunteer coordinators would need to be flexible with their schedules to accommodate volunteers. Day and evening shifts are necessary and also might involve working some weekends, especially when interviewing and training volunteers.

Work Environment

Many homeless shelters are located in urban areas with large populations. The supervisor works at an office in the shelter and likely interacts with the homeless population in addition to volunteers.
