Young children who own a portable Leapster gaming system often enjoy playing the Pet Pals game. Children between the ages of four and seven spend time playing Pet Pals, caring for a virtual puppy and navigating through the game's activities. With successful care of a virtual puppy, a child advances through levels that provide practice in reading, math and writing skills, as well as basic responsibility lessons for caring for a pet.
Instructions
1. Insert the Pet Pals cartridge into the slot of the Leapster handheld console with the label on the cartridge facing up. Push the cartridge in firmly and turn the Leapster console on.
2. Choose a virtual puppy in the game by pressing the arrow button on the screen to navigate through the different breeds and touching the puppy you want. Name the puppy next by choosing letters and pressing "OK." Take the "Pet Pals Puppy Pledge" by promising to care for your puppy. Write your name on the line with the Leapster stylus and then touch "OK." This completes the game set up.
3. The screens take you through the virtual home where you take care of your puppy. The puppy runs through the virtual home, wanting to eat, play, cuddle and play dress-up. Listen to the narrator for instructions about what to do to care for your puppy. Items on the screen will highlight when the puppy wants them or wants to do activities.
4. Feed the puppy when he wants to eat. The puppy will run into the kitchen and the food bowl will highlight. Touch the food bowl and the bag of dog food will appear. Touch the dog food to fill the bowl.
5. Bathe the puppy by touching the shampoo bottle by the kitchen sink. The puppy will run into the bathroom. Follow the instructions of the narrator and first touch the spray tool, then the shampoo tool, and finally the towel tool to give your puppy a bath.
6. Play dress-up by touching the costume box in the entryway room. Touch the different costumes to try them on your puppy.
7. Cuddle with the puppy when the narrator announces that he wants petting. The narrator will give a specific number of pets that he wants and the player must use the stylus to pet the puppy this number of times. The narrator counts as the player pets the puppy.
8. Teach your puppy tricks by touching the treats by the kitchen sink. Choose a trick to teach him and follow the narrator's instructions. After your puppy performs a trick three times, he will have learned the trick.
9. Take the puppy for a walk by touching the leash at the front door. The player must follow the narrator's instructions to find objects on the walk. Use the arrow keys to move the dog. At the end of the walk, view the points earned.
10. Touch the "Dog Show" picture in the entryway and advance through the rounds by following the narrator's instructions. Your puppy will earn points as you follow directions.
11. Touch the dog toy on the couch and play "fling and fetch" with your dog. Touch the "D-pad" on the console to select from multiple choice answers. Touch the "A" button to throw the toy. The dog will fetch the toy. Players can earn points with correct answers.
12. Continue playing to earn points and coins. Points enable a player to move through progressively higher levels with more challenging activities. Coins enable you to purchase dog food, treats, costumes and shampoo. When a puppy needs supplies, the narrator will advise the player purchase more items.
13. Finish the game by turning the Leapster console off. The game will save automatically and you can start it again the next time you turn the console on.
