Rottweilers are powerful chewers.
If you own a Rottweiler, it's likely that you already know they are powerful chewers. The average chew toys on the market may not be capable of withstanding this breed's chewing power and therefore, may break apart quite easily. For safety's sake, you want to invest in chew toys that are up to the challenge, without breaking apart and potentially being swallowed. You should look for toys that are durable and theoretically indestructible. Fortunately, there are a handful of toys crafted with powerful chewers in mind.
Rubber Chew Toys
Among rubber chew toys, Kongs are one of the strongest and durable. According to the ASPCA, Kongs may help ease boredom, reduce destructive behaviors and lessen anxiety when dogs are left alone. Tenacious chewers such as Rottweilers certainly do best with a Kong Extreme. Goughnuts are also a great rubber chew toy designed with safety in mind. Should your Rottweiler chew down the toy to a point where its red core is exposed, the toy should be removed and replaced. The most durable version for Rottweilers is the Goughnut Maxx, which is recommended for extremely powerful chewers.
Nylon Chew Toys
Nylabone has crafted an entire line of chew toys for powerful chewers. Rottweilers benefit best from Nylabone's line of products designed for extra-large dogs weighing over 50 pounds. Nylabones are made of sturdy nylon enhanced with flavors most Rottweilers crave. Worth mentioning is the Galileo bone claimed to be made with the toughest nylon and capable of withstanding the most powerful chewers. Busy Buddy also produces a line of durable toys; its Bristle Bone and Bouncy Bone combines durable nylon with tasty treats.
Zogoflex Chew Toys
Zogoflex is an amazingly tough material for the most powerful chewers out there. West Paw Design produces a unique line of toys made of Zogoflex and they are so confident your Rottweiler will not destroy them that they back them up with a guarantee against destruction. The Tux is said to be the toughest chew toy made by West Paw, which thanks to its design appears to stand up to the most powerful chompers. Next in line are the Hurley and Huck chew toys.
Considerations
No matter how safe or indestructible a chew toy maker claims the product to be, always follow the "better to be safe than sorry" protocol. Never leave your Rottweiler unattended with a chew toy. Discard any chew toys that start to break into pieces or are torn, recommends the Humane Society of the United States. Choose toys that are the appropriate size for your dog's breed and consider that toys that are too small or that break into pieces can be easily swallowed or may lodge in your dog's throat.
