Buy A Live Skunk

So you've decided to add a pet skunk to your family. You've done your research and learned about the ins and outs of skunk ownership. You've checked with your state's Department of Natural Resources or Fish and Game Commission to make sure that it is legal to own a domestic skunk where you live. Now you're ready for the big step. But how does one go about buying a live skunk? Those little stinkers can be hard to find.

Instructions

Buy a Live Skunk

1. Begin your search locally. The closer to home you find your pet skunk, the less stressful the transition will be for both of you. Search the Exotic Pets classifieds in your local newspapers. Check with local pet shops. Even if they don't have a skunk for sale, they might know of a nearby reputable breeder.

2. Consider adopting from a skunk rescue organization. Domestic skunks are often surrendered as ill-prepared owners realize that they have chosen the wrong pet for their personality and lifestyle. In states where pet skunks are legal, there is usually a rescue organization that steps in. These organizations are often willing to release rescued skunks to good homes. There is usually a fee for this. See resources at the bottom of the page.

3. Join skunk email groups, chats and clubs. This can be a great place to network with skunk-savvy people and find out about available skunks or upcoming litters. See resources at the bottom of the page.

4. Locate a nearby skunk breeder. It is best if you can go in person to visit the breeder and make sure that your skunk is coming from a clean, humane and happy home. Ask to see the breeder's license and inspection reports. If it is impossible to travel to the breeder, you may be able to make arrangements to have the skunk shipped to you. However, this is difficult for the skunk and should be a last resort.
