Get A Guide Dog

Get a Guide Dog

Guide dogs are used by legally blind people for assistance in moving around obstacles. These dogs are typically Labradors, German Shepherds or Golden Retrievers. The dogs must be thoroughly trained so that they can do their job effectively. The following will show you obtain your own guide dog, if you qualify, at no cost.

Instructions

1. Locate a guide dog association in your area or a national guide dog program. There are several out there including the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind and the Seeing Eye and Guide Dogs of America.

2. Find out if you qualify for a guide dog. There are a few guidelines you must follow to be eligible to apply for a guide dog including being in good physical health, mentally sound, legally blind, at least 14 years old, able to provide for the needs of the animal and able to travel on your own.

3. Contact a guide dog organization's Consumer Services Department to ask them any questions you may have. Ask about their guidelines, what they require from you and that they send you an application packet, if you qualify.

4. Complete the application and send it back to the company. They may require that you set up a phone interview after the application is received and evaluated.

5. Attend a class, if you pass the application and phone interview, where there will be a choice of dogs suitable to your needs.

6. Train with your dog once a dog has been chosen and matched with you. You will probably work with an instructor with your dog and other students and their dogs.
