What Is The File Extension Ds

Scanners are a type of hardware peripheral that allows users to import images or text from a paper source into a computer. A variety of files are associated with the use of scanners, including .ds files.

Identification

A file with the .ds file extension is known as a TWAIN data source file.

Function

A file with the .ds file extension contains instructions that your computer uses to communicate with a scanner in order to receive items that you have scanned. When the instructions are needed by your computer, the .ds extension allows the file to be quickly located.

Features

DS files are only used with scanners that use TWAIN, a type of technology standard used by many types of scanners. The name TWAIN comes from the phrase "never the twain shall meet" written by Rudyard Kipling and was given to the technology because prior to its development, using scanners frequently resulted in errors, explains the TWAIN Working Group.

Systems and Programs

TWAIN technology and .ds files work only on Windows and Mac OS computers. A variety of scanning software programs have .ds files saved amongst their program files, including Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Considerations

Because the file is necessary for your computer and scanner to function properly, never delete a .ds file from your computer.
