Volunteering to help autistic children can be rewarding.
Thousnds of children have autism or one of the related autism spectrum disorders. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that one in every 150 children has autism or an autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. Autistic children require special-education programs and resources, but additional help may be limited. Volunteering to help autistic children will be rewarding for them and for you.
Instructions
1. Take a class or read a book about teach and care for autistic children. This will help you to better understand the needs of autistic children and communicate with them more effectively.
2. Consult an agency online such as Charity Guide about volunteering to help autistic children in other countries. These programs often combine vacation and volunteering at the same time, which will mean that you will be required to pay for travel expenses.The Autism Society of America can also help you find people and organizations that need your help.
3. Call local school districts and ask to speak with the director of special education. Mention your interest in volunteering with autistic children and ask how you can get started and where your services are needed. Explain any background or education related to autism that you may have.
4. Offer to share a skill with autistic children. Creating art and music and spending time with animals can provide therapy for children with special needs.
