Raise Chickens In Louisiana

Louisiana state law prohibits the raising of farm animals in city limits.

Deciding to raise poultry, specifically chickens, is a huge decision. There is a lot involved---not just from a humane point of view, but in making sure that state law is followed. In Louisiana there are specific rules and regulations concerning this practice.

Instructions

1. Log onto the Louisiana Department of Agriculture's website. This site will help you in your search for state laws, regulations on humane treatment, and even the marketing of chickens. On the left side of the home page, you'll see several relevant links that will guide you to important information. You'll need to know laws about veterinary health requirements, sanitation requirements and cruelty prevention.

2. Register your poultry farm with the USDA. This can be done through their website or through the Louisiana Department of Agriculture. You can find your city's agricultural department in the blue pages of your telephone book or by using your favorite search engine.

3. An inspection by the agricultural department (on behalf of the USDA) is required by Louisiana state law. A poultry license wil not be administered until inspection is complete. If you feel you will not meet their standards, make changes to your farm before inspection day. Clean up, build larger enclosures, or adapt structures to suit their requirements. Make sure that all of the chickens on your farm are clean, healthy and have humane living conditions. Each enclosed chicken in Louisiana should have a space of 5 wingspans in length by 5 wingspans in width. Free-range chickens require 5 square feet of grazing land per chicken. Each egg-laying hen should be allowed out of her enclosure for no less than two hours per day for exercise. Egg-laying hens kept cooped up is considered cruelty to animals and will not be tolerated by the USDA or the Louisiana Department of Agriculture.
