Make Food Donations

If you're looking to make a difference in your community one way is to make food donations. Organizations need food donations year-round, not just during the holidays. Regardless of how much you have to give there are various types of organizations that are in need of food donations. Follow the steps below to help someone who might go hungry.

Instructions

1. Visit givespot.com (see Resources). The website provides a directory of shelters and food banks across the country. Click on your state to locate an organization in your community. Call first to be sure they are accepting food donations.

2. Ask what is needed most. Before you make a food donation call first. Not every program has the same needs. For example some programs may be in need of baby food or fresh foods. Others may need small individually packaged items to deliver to the homeless on the street.

3. Keep various types of organizations in mind. Most people who donate food donate to a soup kitchen or food bank. These are worthy organizations but other types of programs may be in need of food donations. Consider battered women's shelters, emergency children's shelters or programs for the elderly.

4. Be aware of expiration dates. Although non-perishable items are always a good idea, food banks may also be in need of fresh food items such as milk, meats and fruits.

5. Consider man's best friend. Humans are not the only ones in need of food donations. Donate pet food. Animal rescue organization and food banks may be in need of pet food.

6. Get a receipt. Making a food donation is tax deductible. Ask for a receipt to keep when tax season rolls around.
