Crate Train Pug Puppies At Night

Teach your pug to view its crate as a safe retreat.

Crate training your pug puppy is an investment in safe, restful nights for everyone involved. Appropriate use of a crate will assist with house-training, protect your house and belongings, and keep your pug safe and secure. With proper training, your pug will learn to accept its crate as a peaceful place to slumber.

Instructions

1. Place the crate near your bed so you can see and hear your puppy during the night. Make the crate cozy with washable bedding. Consider putting a worn shirt or used towel in the crate as well. Your scent will comfort your puppy.

2. Withhold your pug's water an hour or so before bedtime to decrease the likelihood of an accident. Take your puppy outside for a potty break immediately before putting it in the crate for the night.

3. Ignore fussing and whining when your puppy is initially placed in the crate. If you need to remove the puppy for any reason, wait for a break in the whining. Letting your pug out of the crate while it whines will reinforce the behavior. However, a young puppy will need at least one potty break during the night. Also take it out for a bathroom break as soon as it wakes up.

4. Use the daylight hours to teach your pug that its crate is a positive place. Feed your puppy in the crate, put treats in the crate and never use the crate for punishment.
