Dragons & Dinosaurs Games

Dinosaurs and dragons make exciting characters for games.

The size and appearance of mythical dragons and extinct dinosaurs typically captures the imaginations of kids, and some carry this into adulthood. Game makers have honed in on this fascination by producing games for all ages that include the creatures as part of the fun. Options available range from computer and console games for single players, to board and role-playing multi-player games.

Board Games

Briar Patch produces the "Dinosaurs, Extinct?" board game. Players choose from one of four dinosaur characters, with game play involving moving the dinosaur around the board from prehistoric times to the 21st century without going extinct. Events which cause extinction include fights with other dinosaurs, meteor crashes, volcano eruptions and earthquakes. The player that successfully maneuvers their dinosaur all the way round the board first wins, with the game suitable for two to four players.

Card Games

Looney Labs makes "Seven Dragons," with this domino-style card game suitable for two to five players. The game starts with each player secretly dealt a goal card, with this one of five colored dragons. The cards in the main deck have two to four panels, with different dragon colors shown on each panel. The players take turns placing the cards on a table and must do this in a way that connects the same colors together. To win the game, players must achieve seven connecting panels in their dragon's color. The cards feature dragons designed by fantasy artist Larry Elmore.

Online Games

The Walking With Dinosaurs Games website lets kids learn about dinosaurs while they play. Games on the site include "Piles of Bones," which involves making a full dinosaur skeleton from a set of bones, and "Digging for Dinosaurs," with players using a set of paleontology tools to reveal a hidden dinosaur fossil.

The online role-playing game "Dragon Fable" allows a player to create a character to explore a fantasy world of dragons, monsters and mysterious locations. The player also creates and trains their own dragon to accompany the main character on the adventure.

Console Games

Spyro the Dragon has made a number of appearances in console games, such as those produced for the PlayStation consoles. These include "Spyro: Year of the Dragon," where the player controls the dragon as he adventures through a fantasy world. The aim of the game involves Spyro collecting 150 stolen eggs to save the Year of the Dragon Festival.

Nintendo produces the console game "Battle of Giants: Dinosaurs." Players take on the role of a dinosaur, guiding it through a prehistoric world in a battle to evolve and survive.
