Find The Name Of Who Owns A Business In The State Of Maryland

When key employees of a business fail to address your concerns, you may want to contact the business owner.

In order for a business to be successful, its owner must attend to consumer concerns. As a state of Maryland consumer, you may find it necessary to get in touch with the owner when managers or key employees fail to address your concerns. Every business in the state of Maryland needs a business license or permit in order to operate. The government can tell if a business is paying taxes through its business license. Keeping this in mind, you have a good chance of finding the business owner's name from the Maryland Department of Assessments & Taxation.

Instructions

1. Call or visit the company, or go to their website, and inquire who the owner is. If you choose to go to the company's physical location, ask the manager or an employee for the business license or permit number. Be professional and polite. Most businesses should have their business license in plain view where consumers can see it.

2. Go to the Maryland Department of Assessments & Taxation website (see References).

3. Click the "Business Entity Information (Charter/Personal Property)" link. This link takes you to the "Charter Record Search" page. Here you see options for searching by "Name" or "Department ID."

4. Enter the business name or ID number in the blocks provided under "Name Search" or "Department ID Search." Click the "Search" tab. This routes you to the "Charter Search Results" for the business name or ID number you entered.

5. Click the "General Info" link and proceed to the next page. About midway down the page you will see the name of the business and its Maryland Department of Assessments & Taxation ID number. Look underneath that information, to the left, and see two links in red. One link is the "Status," and the other link is the "Renewal Notice Date" of that business. Next to the red "Status" link you will find the name of the owner of the business (even if it is not active) and the address of the business. Clicking on either of those red links leads to a page that explains the meaning of the "Status" and "Renewal Date" headings.
