Georgia is teeming with life.
There are over 36 million acres of forest throughout the state of Georgia. These dense woodlands are home to thousands of wildlife such as birds, deer and other small animals. Rainfall is heavy, and the soil is rich and nutrient dense which facilitates plenty of plant life. This creates an atmosphere that provides food and shelter for forest creatures.
Beavers
Beavers are found in Georgia forests because of the abundance of streams and lakes. These animals live in the woods, but they are also attracted to water. They are brown with sharp long teeth and have claws with webbed feet. Adults usually weight over 65 pounds. They like to use dead trees to create dams.
Racoons
Raccoons are found throughout the forests in Georgia. These animals breed quickly, and overpopulation spreads into the cities. Raccoons in Georgia have striped black and gray tails and dark markings around their eyes. They also have sharp claws. These forest animals are aggressive, so call Animal Control if you ever come across a family of raccoons.
Bobwhite Quail
The bobwhite quail is the Georgia state bird. These forest-dwelling quail have brown and white coats with black, white and reddish markings on their face near their eyes. Some quails also have a reddish appearance to their coats. While they are hunted in the forests in Georgia, many quail also make their way into small towns. Females lay 12 or more eggs that incubate during a 24-day period.
Flying Squirrels
Flying squirrels are nocturnal creatures that live within the Georgia forests. These animals are not able to literally fly, but they do glide through the air because their bodies are similar to parachutes. They have extra skin flaps that expand outwards as they stretch out their arms and legs. Their white and gray fur is very soft to the touch, and they have flat tails and black beady eyes.
