A pet store owner manages the business and often day-to-day operations of a retail outlet selling animals as pets.


Responsibilities


The responsibilities of a pet store owner depend on the size and structure of the owner's business. In a smaller organization, the pet store owner is often responsible for running all aspects of the business, including bookkeeping, facility maintenance, ordering and stocking, caring for animals, customer service and advertising.


Requirements


There are no specific educational requirements for becoming a pet store owner, although pet store owners must obtain a business license, pet shop license or possible additional licenses depending on jurisdiction. Additionally, prospective owners need sufficient capital to open their business.


Job Prospects


Sucessful operation of a small business such as a pet store can be challenging. An estimated 627,200 small businesses opened in 2008. However, according to the Small Business Administration, about half of entrepreneurships fail after five years.
