When you're no longer able to care for a pet, adoption is a good avenue to explore. Many agencies, stores and websites offer adoption opportunities for people who are interested in adopting pets. A 2009 Humane Society study revealed that 77.5 million people in the United States owned dogs, and 39 percent of each household owned at least one dog. Some 93.6 million people and 33 percent of households owned a cat. This strong interest in pets should come in handy when you're attempting to find a new home for your pet.

1. Consult a friend or family member first. Reaching out to someone you know alleviates the worry of possibly sending your pet to an abusive environment. If someone you know is willing and able to adopt your pet, this allows you the opportunity to drop by and visit your former pet from time to time.
2. Photograph your pet so that you can place it in adoption ads. If you can't find a loved one to take the pet off your hands, the adoption process will be your best bet. In order to advertise your pet, you'll want to have a good, clear photo to post along with detailed information about the animal. This gives people the opportunity to see the appearance and size of the pet so they can decide whether they'd like to reply. Make sure you use a recent photo that properly represents your pet.
3. Post ads in places of high exposure. Consider classified ads in both print and online, pet adoption websites and postings in your workplace and community institutions such as shops and churches. Be sure to include the best contact information so you can respond promptly.
4. Await replies. Post listings regularly to try to get your pet adopted. Schedule a time for the potential owner to see your pet in person, when you get a response to your ad.
5. Contact a local shelter if you're pressed for time. Ideally, you'd want to forgo this step because shelters have a multitude of animals and your pet won't get the same attention that an owner can give it. But if the above steps aren't an option, a shelter can house and feed your pet until it's adopted by an interested person.
