There are many job opportunities for veterinary technicians in the United States and there are even more of a demand for emergency animal medical technicians. An annual income can reach more than $30,000. Working as a technician in an emergency clinic can be demanding, as animals are brought in around the clock. The work schedule requires mostly nights and weekends, since clinic are usually closed at this time.
Instructions
1. Become trained as a veterinary technician. This can be through a two year program. You will receive certification after the program is complete.
2. Continue your education. Complete a four year degree at a college that specializes in educating emergency veterinary technicians, such as "Vatterott College" which has many locations in the U.S. You will learn the responsibility in treating animals humanely, issues related to euthanasia, and current laws regarding animals among other things.
3. Volunteer in an emergency animal hospital. This will help you get extensive on the job training. You will also train by working as an intern at an emergency hospital. This could give you several months of experience before finding a job at an emergency animal hospital.
4. Pass final exam for your four year degree. This will give you the degree needed in order to work in an emergency animal hospital. You will be given the credentials as an official veterinary emergency technician. You will work with x-rays, give injections as needed, give animals anesthesia, as well as learn to work in emergency situations. Upon graduating you will also become automatically a registered technician.
5. Find work. Having some internship and/or volunteer experience, you should have a reasonably easy time of finding work at an emergency animal hospital. You can try to work for the hospital you did intern or volunteer work for, however, there is a high demand for emergency technicians.
