Prepare A Flood Care Package

Natural disasters can be devastating to homes and businesses. Everyone knows the destruction fires, tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes can cause. Not everyone, however, is aware of how much destruction a flood can cause to a structure. Not only does flood water destroy personal belongings, it also leaves every remaining item dirty and covered with bacteria. If you still have a foundation remaining, it can be extremely difficult getting rid of water damage. Flooding can happen any time of the year, but it most typically occurs during the spring. If you know someone who is a flood victim, you can lend more than a shoulder to cry on. Here is everything you need to make your friends and loved ones a flood care package.

Instructions

1. Get the largest plastic container you can find. This might be a large bucket, a storage container or a trough. This will serve two purposes: a container for your flood package items, and a container to hold clean water if the victim's water supply is not yet working.

2. Find disposable place settings. Many flooded areas are without water and electricity for days. This means no washing dishes. Items like paper plates, napkins, plasticware, and disposable cups are helpful for a flood care package.

3. Fill the plastic container with bleach bottles and other disinfectants. When cleanup begins, many hours will be spent on disinfecting walls, floors, toys and other salvageable belongings. Anything and everything that has been touched by flood water should be disinfected to get rid of harmful bacteria.

4. Place a substantial amount of washcloths, towels, rags and sponges into your flood care package. If the flood victim doesn't have anything to disinfect with, there won't be much cleaning done. If you can find disposable items, this is better. It may not be good for the environment, but they will temporarily work well.

5. Shop for nonperishable food items. Place bottled water, canned soup, dehydrated foods, and canned vegetables into your flood care package container. Without electricity, there will be no way for your friends and family to keep goods refrigerated.

6. Place a gift card to a local home improvement store into your flood care package. New electrical panels, light fixtures, wire, wood and drywall are all common materials needed by flood victims. Giving them a gift card will help them pay for these materials when it comes time to fix their home.
