The Different Types Of Animal Careers

If you enjoy animals, you may be a good candidate for taking up an animal career. Whether you want to treat sick animals or preserve wildlife, you can pursue a rewarding vocation involving your animal friends.

Veterinarian

A veterinarian is a doctor for animals. You can specialize in veterinary medicine dealing with household pets, farm animals or wild animals. You can work as a vet in a private practice, a zoo, a wildlife preserve or a national park. Veterinarians have to attend their own medical school, much like traditional physicians. The competition can be fierce for admission to a vet school, but the career is rewarding because you will be able to work with animals and heal them when they get sick.

Animal Trainer

Animal trainers may work with pets, such as teaching obedience training courses for dogs. As an animal trainer, you may also work with show animals, training them to perform tricks for show business or demonstrations. Animal trainers have to have patience and creativity, in order to find a way to teach tricks to animals and encourage proper animal behavior.

Rescue and Adoption

You may work for an animal rescue or humane organization in your quest to help animals in your career. Some people set up their own rescue programs for a specific type of animal, such as a certain breed of dog or another type of household pet. You can also work for an animal rescue or shelter that has already been established. In this type of career, you will sometimes work with animals that have been abandoned or neglected, which can be difficult for some people. However, you can reap the rewards of this type of job when you match an animal with a new family to adopt it and welcome it into their homes forever.

Zoology

Zookeepers get to work with some of the most exotic animals in the world. For this career, you need a specialized degree in zoology and a lot of training. Some of the animals you encounter may be dangerous, poisonous or aggressive, so you have to be careful to treat them with respect and exercise caution around them. Zoologists may work in zoos, aquariums or wildlife preserves.

Forests and Parks

As a park ranger you would encounter animals on a regular basis. Your job would involve protecting and preserving a natural habitat for animals in any number of settings, from forests to jungles to deserts. Park rangers can work at national parks, zoos, wildlife preserves and other animal attractions to make sure that park guests follow all rules of the parks, and to keep an eye on the environment and animals within the park at all times.
