Maltese Breed Information

Maltese Breed Information

A Maltese is a lovable breed of dog prized for their flowing pure white coats. They are eager to please their owners and make good companion dogs.

History

The Maltese breed of dog originated around 8,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed the dog came from the island of Malta, although there is no real evidence to support this. Representations of the Maltese breed have been found on artifacts dating from 600-300 B.C. In Fayum, Egypt.

Size

The breed standard for the size of a Maltese is 7 lbs. and under, with the typical and preferred size between 4 and 6 lbs.

Coat

Maltese dogs have a long, straight, silky white coat. These dogs are non-shedding and have no undercoat.

Temperament

Maltese make good lap dogs because they are gentle and trusting, and love to be held. A fragile breed, they are not suitable for young or rambunctious children.

Activity

Maltese make good apartment or condominium dogs because they do not need extensive exercise and activity. They have lots of energy and enjoy indoor play or a run around a small yard.

Famous Ties

Notable owners of Maltese in ancient times include Roman emperor Claudius and historians and poets including Aristotle, Timon and Saint Clement of Alexandria.
