Choose An Adoption Agency

Choose an Adoption Agency

Adopting a child is a long, laborious process. Finding the right agency to guide you through each leg of the journey is the first step.

Instructions

1. Get a copy of the National Adoption Directory from the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse.

2. Read this for listings of state adoption specialists and local adoptive parent support groups that can help you select an agency.

3. Look in the Yellow Pages under "Adoption Agencies" for a private agency or "Social Services" for a public agency.

4. Ask for referrals from an adoption support group or other adoptive parents - word of mouth is often the best approach.

5. Contact your state licensing specialist once you've narrowed down your choices to ensure that the agency you're interested in is licensed.

6. Contact your state's Office of the Attorney General to find out if any complaints have been lodged against the agency.

7. Ask the agency spokespeople up front about associated fees and payment schedules.

8. Attend any educational seminars for prospective parents if the agency offers them. This will give you a feel for the organization's style and approach.
