List of International Charities
International charities work to provide aid to those in need worldwide. Many aim to reach poor areas where people can't afford basic services. Or they help abused people who don't have a voice. The services vary to meet people's needs. They can include health care, education and housing.
Helen Keller International
Helen Keller International (HKI) works to prevent blindness and reduce malnutrition in the world. The well-known Helen Keller, along with George Kessler, founded the charity in 1915. Today, HKI helps people in 22 countries, including the United States, eight countries in Asia and 13 nations in Africa. The charity, based in New York City, operates in three ways. It designs programs to meet local needs such as helping schools or providing health care. HKI also develops partnerships with community groups, health organizations and governments. The charity also works to combine different types of care into the most efficient delivery method. For example, HKI notes that groups that distribute onchocerciasis-preventing drugs could also deliver vitamin A capsules, screen for cataracts, and provide primary eye care instead of focusing on one function.
