Adopt A Puppy From Beagle Rescue

In an effort to save as many dogs as possible from shelters, dog-rescue organizations adopt dogs from shelters and place them in foster homes until they can find permanent homes. Most of these volunteer-run organizations focus on a particular breed. There are Beagle Rescue organizations all over the country that work to keep beagles out of animal shelters and in loving homes. They have strict rules about who can adopt dogs from their program to ensure the dog has a home for life and will not end up in danger again. The organization will make sure the dog is spayed or neutered and is caught up on all shots and medical care before re-homing it.

Instructions

1. Make sure you are really ready to adopt a dog. Make your home and yard dog-safe with no avenues of escape. Know who will take care of the dog and when. When you adopt a puppy, someone needs to be home with it most of the time.

2. Locate the website for your local Beagle Rescue and peruse the listings on the site until you find a dog that would fit in with your family and lifestyle. Some dogs do best in a home with other animals; some do better if they are an “only child.” Some dogs are child-safe and others are not.

3. Contact the Beagle Rescue representative to indicate your interest in the dog.

4. Fill out an application for adoption and wait for approval.

5. Visit the beagle at its foster home. Bring everyone who lives in your home to make sure everyone gets along with the dog.

6. Participate in an interview with the dog’s foster parent or a Beagle Rescue representative. You will be asked about your experience with dogs (beagles in particular), your views on training and what the dog’s home life would be like.

7. If you are approved to adopt the dog, you will likely have a “sleepover” period, when the dog will live with you for one to two weeks to makes sure it is settling in and you and the beagle are happy. At this point, you will be asked to write a check for the adoption fee.

8. Finalize the adoption process after the sleepover. You will be asked to sign an agreement to abide by the Beagle Rescue’s rules. There will likely be clauses asking you to promise to train the dog and to return it to Beagle Rescue if you can not keep it for any reason. Your check will then be cashed and the dog will be yours!
