Shih Tzu
Bladder infections are common in all dogs and shih tzus are no exception. Bladder infections, more properly known as urinary tract infections, are most often see in female dogs because they have shorter urethras.
UTI
A bladder infection is actually a urinary tract infection. Bacteria in the urinary tract can reproduce at alarming rates, causing infection. Female shih tzus are more susceptible to infection both as puppies and later in life.
Symptoms
Early symptoms often go unnoticed but, as the condition worsens, obvious signs become visible like straining to urinate, blood in the urine or a pungent odor coming from the urine. Fatigue and fever may also be observed.
Treatment
It is necessary to take the shih tzu to a veterinarian to be examined if noticeable symptoms of a UTI are present. The vet will test the dog's urine for bacteria. If the culture comes back positive, the pet will be placed on antibiotics to cure the infection.
Prevention/Solution
Regular bathing helps control bacteria. To reduce bacteria growth in food and water dishes, wash them frequently with hot water. Daily walks are helpful as well. The more often dogs urinate, the less likely it is that bacteria will build up in the urinary tract.
Causes
UTIs are extremely common but eating contaminated food, not drinking enough water and gender can play a part.
