Is It Safe To Use Lawn Fertilizer Around My Dogs

Thick green grass is highly desirable, and many people use fertilizer in order to help create the lawn they desire. However, many fertilizers can be harmful to dogs, so it is important to treat your lawn---and your pup---with care.

Why Use Fertilizer?

Many lawns need a little extra help to stay plush and green. Using a fertilizer can help provide grass with extra nutrients it is lacking, such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Some even contain weed-killers to keep the lawn free of weeds.

Chemical Fertilizers

As a general rule, chemical fertilizers should be avoided if you have a dog. Many of them are toxic and could make the dog very sick, and could even be lethal if ingested in large quantities. They can also cause skin irritation if the dog's skin comes into contact with the fertilizer.

Natural Fertilizers

There are many natural and organic fertilizers available that are perfectly safe for use around dogs. They can be made from a variety of ingredients, such as seaweed, kelp and bone meal.

Use

Before treating your lawn, make sure none of the dog's toys or dishes is left in the area. Keep the dog off your treated lawn for a day or two, and wash off its paws if it does come in contact with the grass.

Precautions

Before using any fertilizer, read the package carefully to see if it is safe for use around pets. It is important to be careful, even if using a natural or organic product. If necessary, call the manufacturer and consider double-checking with your veterinarian.
