Humane Law Enforcement Training

Law enforcement to protect animals from cruelty.

Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) is a division of the police branch of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). HLE operates only in the state of New York.

Minimum Requirements

Before you can become an HLE officer you must be at least 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States. You must have a New York driver's license and be a resident of New York.

Classes and Training

The ASPCA will provide training to become certified as an HLE officer in the state of New York but you can increase your chances of success by taking related classes. Many colleges offer criminal justice classes that prepare you to become an HLE officer. You can increase your chances of success by working as a law enforcement officer for another agency or by getting some experience as a volunteer.

Responsibilities

HLE officers are required to maintain investigative reports of incidents regarding animal cruelty, and they must write reports and testify in court if necessary. They also speak to and educate the public on issues relating to animal welfare.
