Mississippi Rabies Law

Pet owners in Mississippi must be aware of the rabies law.

Every dog or cat owner must be aware of the rabies laws of his state. In Mississippi there are two types of laws intended to control and prevent rabies: statutes enacted by a legislative body and regulations issued by an executive authority.

Requirements

Kittens three months or older must be vaccinated against rabies.

In the state of Mississippi, any owner of a dog or cat aged three months or older must vaccinate her pet against rabies. Failing to abide by this statute will cause the owner in question to be subject to penalties.

Validity

In order to be valid, the rabies inoculation must be administered by a licensed veterinarian or a competent person who was granted permission by the State Board of Health.

Tags

The vaccine's manufacturing company must furnish, along with with ampoule of vaccine, a metal tag with the serial number of the vaccination and the year the dog or cat was vaccinated. The pet owner must ensure this tag is securely attached to the pet's collar at all times.

Rabies Certificate

Whoever vaccinates the animal must furnish the pet owner with a rabies certificate. Such certificate must display the breed, sex and markings of the animal along with the serial number of the tag attached to the collar.

Regulations

According to Mississippi's State Department of Health Regulations, dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies at 3 months of age, then vaccinated again one year later, and finally revaccinated every three years thereafter.

Penalties

Failure to comply with such statutes and regulations constitutes a misdemeanor, where the offender may be fined for the first offense a sum not to exceed $5, as of July, 2010, a sum not to exceed $25 for second offenses and a sum not to exceed $50 for third offenses, plus all costs.
