Prairie dogs are rodents that grow up to 13 inches long and weigh approximately 3 pounds. They are often considered pests and have been hunted in the past in order to keep the population down. You must have a hunting license to hunt prairie dogs in Texas. You can obtain a license at gun shops, sporting good stores and bait and tackle stores.

Pope Brothers Guide Service, established in 2004, provides several different hunting expeditions, including prairie dog hunts. Hunts are provided year-round but are recommended from January to April or September to October. Make your reservations early because the hunts can fill up a year in advance. Pope Brothers offers two- and three-day hunts for prairie dogs. Amenities include lodge accommodations, meals and an experienced guide. You must provide your own guns and ammunition. Bring at least 400 rounds of ammunition per day for your hunt.

Texas Varmint Hunting
Texas Varmint Hunting's prairie dog hunts are held May through September. You will be provided with accommodations, meals, a local guide, transportation and gun cleaning supplies, but you must bring firearms and ammunition and pay for any alcoholic beverages that you consume. You should plan on bringing at least 200 rounds of ammunition per day. Each hunt last for four days and three nights.

Texas Prairie Dog Safaris
Larry Gene Pate, a skilled prairie dog hunter, offers one-, two- and three-day hunts. The one-day safaris are available only to regular customers. Each hunt consists of meals and accommodations for the duration of your trip. You depart each morning for the hunt at 7:30 a.m. and return at 6 p.m. You will learn site and track prairie dogs and learn the correct ammo and guns to use. Bring at least 400 rounds of ammunition for each day of the hunt.
