Wisconsin License Plate Types

In Wisconsin, antique and collector motorcycles are granted a special license plate.

In the state of Wisconsin, different types of vehicles must register for different types of license plates. There are 10 different main categories a vehicle owner can chose from when applying for a new license plate.

Automobiles

There are two main types of license plates for cars, SUVs and vans that dedicate more than 50 percent of their internal space to seating. The first is the regular license plate, randomly numbered and issued by the state. The other is the personalized license plate, which allows a driver to pick their own series of letters or number so long as no else in the state has already registered it.

Motorcycle and Moped

There are several different types of motorcycle license plates available to the general public. A regular motorcyle plate should be placed on any motorcycle that is a driver's only vehicle or is a second vehicle that is not an antique or collector's motorcycle. An antique plate can be placed on a motorcycle manufactured before 1945 that has not been altered from the manufacturer's specifications. A collector's plate is issued to a motorcycle 20 years or older that has not been altered from the manufacturer's specifications. For both an antique and collector's plate, the driver must also have a regularly registered vehicle. The U.S. veteran motorcycle plate is available for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who submit proof of eligibility. Mopeds are issued a special moped license plate.

Light Truck

There are two different classifications of license plate for a light truck; farm truck and truck-private carrier. A farm truck license plate is issued for trucks that do not exceed 12,000 pounds and are used strictly for farm business only. A truck-private carrier plate is issued for trucks up to 8,000 pounds and can be used for a dual-purpose farm truck, mobile home or truck for hire.

Special License Plates

There are a large variety of charitable organizations that raise money through the registration of special license plates. In Wisconsin, there are children's charities, wildlife charities and organ donation awareness programs. Other special plates include organization memberships, college alumni and volunteer rescue plates.
