Summer jobs enable a teenager to learn responsibility, good work habits and earn money during the summer months. Teens have the opportunity to learn new skills and network for their future. Teens should consider several things before applying for fun summer jobs.
Gather Your Information
One of the challenges to fun summer jobs for a teenager is convincing employers to hire you. Gather your information before you start filling out applications. Write a list of references with their current addresses and phone numbers. Write a short list of your skills--such as hard worker, Internet skills, team player, organized, dependable, honest, phone skills, good with children, good with animals and punctual. Write a list of clubs and club sponsors' names. Ask teachers for letters of reference or recommendation throughout the school year. Make copies of these.
Fill Out the Application
Fill out an application with blue or black ink. Bring the information you gathered to job places, in case you have to fill out the application there. You should dress nicely and appropriately for the specific workplace when picking up and dropping off applications. This will make a good first impression. For example, you could wear jeans and a dress shirt to apply for a summer camp job or a casual business outfit to apply for a filing clerk position.
Become a Teen Entrepreneur
One fun summer job is to start a teen business. Write down what type of activities you enjoy. Then write a list of your skills. Match your skills with the activities. Study the lists and brainstorm for potential teen business jobs. Select one from the list. Advertise and enjoy your summer as a teen entrepreneur. For example, you might be good with the family dog and enjoy animals. You could do a dog walking service in your neighborhood. You could make and sell homemade dog biscuits if you enjoyed cooking. Or perhaps, if you're good at sewing you could create and sell dog clothing. You combine your skills and what you like to create a the perfect job.
Network with Others
Talk to relatives, friends and even school staff about the types of things you think are fun and enjoyable. Networking with these people will give you a heads-up for fun summer jobs that might be available in your area that are not advertised. You can increase your chances of getting hired if you get a letter of recommendation and use the person as a reference. For example, a relative might work in a dance studio and need an assistant or someone to clean the studio between dance lessons.
Volunteer in the Community
Another way to find a fun summer teen job is to volunteer in your community. This will give you a chance to network and find out if you even like a particular type of job. You can fulfill your volunteer commitment and then mark that type of job off of your list of potential jobs for other summers if you do not enjoy it. You may find the opposite to be true. You can learn about new jobs and add them to your list.
