Since 2010, pixie pigs have received nation-wide exposure in the media. Pixie pigs appeared in the fifth season of "How I Met Your Mother" as well as on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." Otherwise known as teacup pigs, mini-pigs, pocket pigs and miniature potbelly pigs, pixie pigs have been specially bred to ensure their diminutive size and suitability as domestic pets.
Appearance
Fully grown adult pixie pigs measure about 12 inches from the ground to the front shoulder, approximately the same height as a French bulldog. They weigh between 30 and 45 pounds. There are a variety of pixie pig colors, ranging from pink and white to black.
Care
Pixie pigs need to have walks and other forms of regular exercise, and they enjoy playing with toys. When setting up a pixie pig's living area, be sure it does not have to climb stairs because they are not very good at this task. Pixie pigs have special dietary needs. The majority of their diet should consist of grains, hay and fresh vegetables, and you can give them fruits as a treat. Chocolate and avocados are toxic to pixie pigs, so these foods should be kept out of reach. When well cared for, pixie pigs have a lifespan between 12 and 15 years.
Training
Pixie pigs, like other types of pigs, are very intelligent animals. Through positive reinforcement, they can learn to respect people's authority and can even perform tricks such as sitting on command. They can also learn to use a litter box in just a couple of days. However, breeders advise not using regular cat litter because the pig might eat it.
Considerations
Purchasing a pixie pig from a breeder is a major commitment. Because of their long life spans, you must be willing to invest many years caring for your pig. They require attention and regular exercise and play time. Additionally, be advised that not all communities are zoned for pigs.
