Opportunities For Kids Who Want To Work With Animals

Children who love animals can make a career of taking care of them.

If your child has a love for animals, she has variety of careers to choose from. Career options include veterinary medicine, pet grooming, training animals and working in animal control. Help her pursue a career with animals by guiding her in researching different careers and encouraging her to go after her dreams.

Veternarian

Veterinarians take care of sick and injured animals. They give shots, prescribe medicine and perform surgeries. Because they sometimes work with animals who are in pain or are scared, they have to be cautious to avoid being bitten or scratched. In addition to four years of undergraduate school, veterinarians usually attend four years of veterinary school. Veterinarians need to be kind and compassionate toward the animals they care for, and must communicate effectively with pet owners.

Pet Groomers

Pet groomers provide grooming services to pets. They typically work with dogs and cats. In addition to bathing animals and cutting their nails, pet groomers cut, shave and style their coats. They work in veterinary clinics, salons, animals shelters and pet stores. Pet groomers are responsible for keeping a safe and clean environment for animals by sanitizing and cleaning their equipment. Many pet groomers learn groom pets in a six to ten week apprenticeship.

Animal Trainer

Animal trainers typically train animals like dogs, horses and dolphins. They not only train animals to be obedient, they also teach them perform and provide services to disabled people. One way they reinforce good behavior in their training is to give animals treats when they respond correctly. Most animal trainers have at least a high school diploma or GED. While some trainers only have to take a few workshops, others must hold a four-year degree. For example, dolphin trainers often hold a bachelor's degree in marine biology or a related field.

Animal Caretaker

Animal caretakers provide basic care to animals by feeding them, walking them and cleaning their cages. They also keep track of their medical records, educate the public about neutering, screen individuals who want to adopt an animal and euthanize severely ill animals. Animal care takers work in veterinary clinics, kennels and animal shelters. Although specific training isn't required, animal caretakers can attend workshops and training programs through non-profit animal organizations.
