Fish For Spanish Mackerel In The Galveston Surf

Spanish Mackerel are long, thin fish and easily identified by their sharp teeth, green backs and silver sides with irregular yellow spots. They fight until they are worn out, often jumping out of the water, and die quickly when put on a stringer. The average size you catch in the surf is about 2 pounds but they go up to 12 pounds.

Instructions

1. Look for Spanish Mackerel when the gulf is calm enough for the green water to come in to at least the second sand bar. Spanish Mackerel will run right along the green line in loosely organized schools. The late spring and early fall are the best times to fish for them. November through February is the worst time. A kayak or pedal boat are good fishing platforms or you can wade fish.

2. Rig your short light- or medium-action pole with 20 pound test line and 8 inches of 30 pound steel leader since a Mackerel's teeth are sharp. The best lure is a medium or large silver spoon.

3. Troll between the second and third sand bar if in a boat. The bars are identified as the points where the waves start to break. When you are near birds, note the direction they are moving, wait until a few of them hit the water and cast just in front of them.

4. Get out as far as you can and cast down wind along the green line of water If you are wading.
