Shitzu Puppy Information

Shitzu Puppy Information

The Shitzu--often spelled as "Shih Tzu"--is a small dog that is also called the lion or chrysanthemum dog. This cute-faced dog with flowing long hair is ideal for human companionship and as a show dog.

History

The American Kennel Club describes the Shitzu as a royal dog cherished in Asia for over a thousand years. The dog descended from Lhaso Apso and Pekingese dogs.

Features

The Shitzu puppy is a happy and trusting dog. It often gets underfoot in its eagerness to be with you. The Shitzu puppy may not be suited to families with small children, as it is easily injured.

Training

The American Shitzu Club notes that a Shitzu is slow to learn. Two to three months are typically needed to potty train a puppy, and obedience training can take up to two years or longer.

Drinking

Train your puppy to drink from a lick bottle. The Shitzu has a short nose that makes it difficult for the breed to drink from bowls.

Grooming

Handle your puppy's feet and body often so that it enjoys grooming. As it grows, the dog must be brushed daily to reduce mats and tangles.

Benefits

Your Shitzu puppy does not need much exercise and adjusts well to a small space or apartment living. Expect a long-time companion, as the Shitzu lives 13 to 15 years.
