Who has to do one?
Everyone who is trying to adopt a child who is not related to them must undergo a home evaluation. Often, even distant relatives of the child must be evaluated.
How long does it take?
Because all background and biographical documents should already be turned in, the in-home interview shouldn't last more than three or four hours.
What are they checking for?
Social workers look around your home to ensure that there are no safety or health hazards for a baby. They are not judging the way you live, just making sure that it is safe for a baby to live in.
Does the house need to be child-proofed?
The house does not need to be child-proofed unless you already have a child living in it. There will be plenty of time to child-proof your home.
Questions that might be asked
The social worker will ask many questions, and there are no right or wrong answers. Simply answer them honestly. You might be asked about your marriage, your friends and your religious beliefs. If you do not have children, you might be asked what you know about children. Your financial stability might be under question, as well as your jobs and health coverage for any adopted children.
